Gigsters are the ‘new age artisans of skills, ability and technology’ who are a growing number in our modern economy which now demands a wide cohort of industry professionals to provide immediate solutions to pain point problems. While self-employment has dropped from 15% of the workforce in the 1990s to 10% in 2018, as the economy has expanded the raw numbers have grown. With the dramatic economic challenge of coronavirus, many talented people may be forced to re-think where they deploy their talents – and gigging may become an option.
This book by Sue Ellson is a universal guide for those considering a stratospheric strategy for a life amongst the stars, and for those already steering ‘Gigship Enterprise’ through the asteroid belt and beaming down to explore new worlds of employment opportunities and alien threats.
The book presents gigsters as more than freelancers because they:
incorporate a variety of technology platforms to attract and retain gigs that are aligned with their values and lifestyle …
There’s comprehensive advice on the technology needed for success. The section on ‘Gigster Technology Apps’ has valuable advice on the pros and cons of mobile phone or online applications, social media, websites, online portals and other platforms with specific schooling in why ‘some apps are a complete waste of time’. There is clear information on the pitfalls that would take time and money to understand fully, and for a gigster – time IS money! There are many pages of clear advice based on personal experience and targeted research regarding precise technical issues that would never occur to the average person.
But the book’s not just a teckfest; it encourages integrating hard knowledge with understanding and living your personal values as crucial to your gigster fulfilment. Most people go down the gigster path to be their own boss – so why would you be your own worst boss? The 10 Gigster Super Powers (intuition; conscience; emotional intelligence; cultural intelligence; authenticity; responsibility; ethics; proactivity; wisdom; and persistence) collate the attitudes, values, and personal qualities that are the basis of career success and fulfilment. And, it’s not all high tech and tough ethics – there’s plenty of intuition, creativity, and fun (and poetry!) in the book. The descriptions of the 12 Gigster Types, like Working Warrior, Principled Pragmatist, and Tenacious Temporary invite you to figure out what type of gigster you are. While these categories are ‘indicative rather than prescriptive’ they open up thinking on relating Gigster Types to your everyday life.
There are plenty of targeted exercises throughout the book to focus thinking on the next stage. They’re even collected at the end of the book so you can binge in one hit – maybe you’re a Box Binger! You can also use that section to review your position on the concepts presented in the text, as reading the book may have changed your mind on the issues.
Gigsters is a stand-alone book, but could also be seen as another star in the 120 Ways constellation that started with 120 Ways To Achieve Your Purpose with LinkedIn – one of the twelve outstanding career books listed in The Australian Career Book Collection.
Addition 02/04/20 Seriously, it was a great pleasure to write this book review. For those who know Sue, you’ll recognise her ‘voice’ in this book – direct, authentic, and creative. Her first book in the series is ‘120 ways to achieve your purpose with Linkedin’. While LI alters from time to time, the book is an ever-relevant classic on this international platform. For that reason ‘120 ways’ is listed in The Australian Career Book Collection which is a ‘Hall of Fame’ of Australian career books listed by genre.
Response from Sue Ellson: Thank you Lawrence for a most comprehensive review of the book! Yes, the book is a timely publication for people who have found that their traditional full-time or part-time role has or will change in the future. There is a lot of personal experience in there – on and off for 25 years in fact but yes, I have also incorporated other technological information that will help people consider a broader range of options and as you suggest ‘open up their thinking.’ Yes, it was designed as a stand alone book and I can see you mentioning my first book ‘120 Ways To Achieve Your Purpose With LinkedIn’ – which again, is a strategic guide to the modern world of work. Once again Lawrence, thanks for your feedback!

As a full-time freelancer myself (for 6 years now), I picked this up from the new book shelf at the local library. Lots of valuable content here, but the self-published look of the interior design and layout lets the book down. A back to front “G” on the cover also makes the title unreadable. I was left wondering what the author actually does to earn a living – what is she a trainer and consultant in? Because the book covers a range of gigster-type ways of business, it is more a motivational book than a practical book for a particular field or occupation, but the activity exercises are helpful to people starting out who may not have thought of these issues.
And why does the author’s Goodreads profile highlight the year she got divorced – odd!
Response from Sue Ellson: Thank you Rhonda for your review. Yes, I am self published and I do plan to have future books tidied up – I was on a tight timeline with the production of this book – it was all done by me! The reverse G on the front cover is designed to make you look twice but also to highlight the word ‘gig.’ I am a Gigster and do a variety of work, but what I am most well known for is being an Independent LinkedIn Specialist but yes, I train and I consult. It is designed to help people make the transition to being a Gigster, possibly from full-time or part-time work and you are right, it is for people who are starting out. I mention the year of divorce because I wanted to highlight how long I was married for – but also to help those readers who are not in a relationship to let them know you can be a Gigster on your own. Once again, thank you for your feedback Rhonda.

It is so lovely to read as it is like a conversation interspersed with your beautiful poetry.
Response from Sue Ellson: Thank you Shari, I am so glad to hear that you describe it as like a conversation as that was exactly my intention – to engage the reader with their own thoughts and ideas to find new ways to manage their life and career in the future. I trust that you find it helpful both for your own career and for those you talk to in your practice.

To a baby boomer that’s been asleep for 20 years, the term ‘gigster’ might sound like a cross between gangster and hipster. But no blood relationship running there.
Sue Ellson’s new book Gigsters is actually a user friendly ride through the workplace and life choices we have now like never before. This book takes the daunting out of digital and provides some helpful advice to navigating our way and careers in the modern world, with a full head of steam.
Entrepreneurship is now far more accessible to all. Read Sue’s book to find out where, why and how.
Response from Sue Ellson: Thank you Peter for taking the time to provide this insightful and informative review. Sue Ellson ?

Gigsters by Sue Ellson provides a reflective collection of the author’s own transition and development as a gigster herself. Through her own experiences, Sue has developed a range of assessments and principles to help position readers as to the type of gigster they identify as, and highlights that the journey and situation of a gigster “…is what it is” at the time so you have to make the best of it. Sue then shows how to tackle the opportunities presented by society today through her 10 Gigster Commandments as guiding principles to actions the reader should take.
This is a book for gigsters of every generation and age. As long as you are tech savvy, have an open mind, and are prepared to take even small steps towards achieving your goals, then Gigsters will provide the bible reference and insights you need for your journey.
Response from Sue Ellson: Thanks Rob, yes, the book is suitable for people of all ages that are willing to develop their technological capabilities.

This is an exciting, interesting and easy to read book. However, Sue has not avoided the challenges life can throw up at any time and she encourages you not to give up but to keep trying until you succeed.
